East West Manufacturing, a leader in domestic offshore manufacturing, has promoted Jennifer Catalan from Logistics Administrator to sales and marketing coordinator "East West Manufacturing is poised for a year of strong growth, and we have promoted Jennifer from Logistics to Marketing to help us more successfully tell our story and develop new business,” Jeff Sweeney, chief marketing officer and co-founder, stated in a release. “Jennifer has been with the company for four years, serving in various capacities, so she understands very well who we are and what we do. She will make sure we communicate effectively with our various audiences using effective traditional and social media tools, as well as face-to-face presentations.”

Offshore Manufacturer Looks Beyond China

Vietnam, other Asian markets enticing as 'Made in China' grows more costly

When East West Manufacturing began helping U.S. companies cut costs and boost efficiency by making plastic, rubber and electronic parts and motors overseas, clients wondered how Chinese workers could scrape by on such meager wages.

"Now people are saying, 'China's getting expensive. You're having to pay them too much,'" Scott Ellyson, East West's chief executive officer, told GlobalAtlanta.

Along with rising wages, China's currency is gradually appreciating against the dollar, making outsourcing a more expensive proposition. Many U.S. lawmakers welcome the trend, saying China keeps the yuan artificially low, bolstering its own exporters at the expense of American workers.

Bright Spots In the Economy

The article features an interview with East West Manufacturing CEO Scott Ellyson speaking about the extensive quality procedures developed for every product East West makes. Just one of the many benefits of Domestic Offshore Manufacturing℠.

"East West project engineers are assigned to specific projects. "Everything we manufacture has a quality procedure associated with it that is developed by the project engineer in conjunction with the customer to define all the quality criteria, usually involving three areas -- dimensional, functional and cosmetic," Ellyson explains. "That is the living document for every product we make. Our inspectors use that document to inspect every shipment before it is allowed to ship to the United States."

Is Vietnam the next China?

Not really, and that’s a good thing. It is also precisely why East West manufactures in both locales. While Vietnam enjoys certain labor and raw material cost advantages, it will likely never match China’s depth and breadth of manufacturing expertise.

China’s sheer size and 20-year head start in building an infrastructure to support its manufacturing base will insure its seat at the head of the manufacturing table for years to come. China possesses a broad array of manufacturing disciplines, and a bench strength which often extends 4 or 5 deep per local supplier type. The resulting versatility and scalability are unrivaled in Asia, if not the world.

Vietnam’s relative lack of manufacturing maturity, and its strong hunger to achieve a level of success there, are its draw. With labor costs significantly lower than China and an environment friendly to outside investment, Vietnam is very attractive for the correct manufacturing fit. Injection molding, light electronics, and overall assembly work are particularly symbiotic with capabilities there.

East West Presents at PDMA Bagels and Brains

East West was very excited to participate in the Georgia chapter of PDMA's Bagels and Brains event. The featured topic was "Production: The Last Mile" and invited experts on both domestic and offshore manufacturing fronts to help demystify the prototype/short-run and offshore manufacturing process/transition. Tim Smock of Seaway Plastics Engineering presented the domestic manufacturing and prototyping point of view while East West's very own Jeff Sweeney spoke about the hurdles companies and their engineers face when taking production offshore and gave expert advice on the offshore supplier's perspective as well as common mistakes and pitfalls to avoid.
